WebP Images: The 2-Minute Trick That Makes Your Site 3x Faster
If I told you that you could make your website load 3 times faster in under 2 minutes — for free, without coding — would you do it?
That's what converting your images to WebP does. It's the single easiest website speed win available today, and yet most Filipino business websites aren't doing it.
Let me show you why it matters and exactly how to do it.
What Is WebP?
WebP is an image format developed by Google. It makes image files dramatically smaller than JPEG or PNG — usually 25-35% smaller, often much more — with zero visible quality loss.
Here's a real example from a client project:

That's a 24× reduction from the original. And every modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge — basically everything from the last 5 years) supports WebP.
Why This Matters for Your Business
Images are usually 60-80% of a web page's total weight. When someone visits your site, their browser downloads your HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and images. The images take the longest.
If your images are 2MB each and you have 6 on your homepage, that's 12MB of data your visitor has to download before they see your page properly.
On a Filipino mobile data connection (which averages 5-15 Mbps), that's:
- JPEGs (12MB total): 6-19 seconds to load
- WebP (2.5MB total): 1.3-4 seconds to load
Visitors leave after 3 seconds. Do the math.
How to Convert Your Images to WebP
You have three options, from easiest to most powerful.
Option 1: Use an Online Tool (No Install)
If you have just a few images, use a free online converter:
- squoosh.app — Google's official tool, lets you compare quality visually
- convertio.co — batch convert up to 100MB free
Drag in your image, choose WebP, download the result. Done.
Option 2: Use a Desktop Batch Tool (For Folders of Images)
If you have dozens or hundreds of product photos, blog images, or portfolio shots, you want a desktop tool that can batch-process an entire folder.
There are several good ones — look for a tool that can:
- Convert PNG, JPG, JPEG, BMP, TIFF, GIF to WebP
- Process a whole folder (and its subfolders) in one click
- Let you set a target quality (80-85 is the sweet spot)
- Optionally resize while converting (more on that below)
Pro tip: Convert at quality 82 for photos, 90 for graphics with text. Photos tolerate more compression; text and sharp edges show artifacts faster.
Option 3: Set Up Automated Conversion (Advanced)
If you run a WordPress site, install the WebP Express or ShortPixel plugin. They automatically convert every image you upload to WebP and serve it to browsers that support it.
If you're on static HTML (like this blog), you convert manually but only once per image — set it and forget it.
Don't Forget to Resize First
Converting to WebP shrinks the file. But if your image is 4000 pixels wide and you're displaying it at 800 pixels wide, you're still wasting bandwidth.
Before converting, resize your images to the largest size they'll actually be displayed at. A good rule:
- Blog hero images: 1200px wide
- Blog grid thumbnails: 600px wide
- Product photos: 1000-1200px wide
- Avatars / icons: 200-400px wide
Combine resizing + WebP conversion and you can take a 5MB phone photo down to 80KB with zero visible quality loss.
The HTML: Serving WebP
Once you have your .webp files, you need to make sure browsers actually
use them. There are two ways:
Method 1: Just Replace the Files (Simplest)
Replace your image.jpg with image.webp and update your HTML:

Every modern browser supports WebP, so this works for 95%+ of visitors. If you want to support ancient browsers (IE, old Safari), use method 2.
Method 2: Use <picture> for Fallbacks (Safest)

</picture>
The browser picks WebP if it supports it, falls back to JPEG otherwise. Slightly more code, but bulletproof.
Don't Forget These Attributes
While you're editing image tags, add width and height:
<img src="hero.webp" alt="..." width="1200" height="630">
This tells the browser the image's aspect ratio before it loads, so the browser reserves the right amount of space. Without it, the page jumps when the image loads — which is terrible UX and hurts your Google ranking (Google calls this "Cumulative Layout Shift" and penalizes it).
How to Verify It Worked
After converting:
- Open your site in Chrome
- Right-click → Inspect → Network tab
- Reload the page
- Look at the image files — they should say
image/webpunder "Type"
If you see .jpg or .png still loading, your HTML isn't pointing to the
WebP versions.
The 2-Minute Version
No time? Here's the absolute fastest path:
- Open your image folder
- Select all images
- Batch convert to WebP at quality 82
- Upload the WebP files to your server
- Update the
.jpg/.pngreferences in your HTML to.webp
That's it. Your site just got 2-3× faster.
